Why I’m Writing More About Cars
One of my goals this year was simple: write more.
Not because I want to become a motoring journalist, but because I enjoy the process of reflecting on the cars I’m lucky enough to drive and own. Writing forces me to think more deeply about why certain cars resonate, what makes them special, and why they leave a lasting impression.
After sharing my thoughts on the Porsche 997.2 GT3 RS, it felt only right to write about a car at the opposite end of the performance spectrum.
Our BMW i3.
On paper, it shouldn’t be one of my favourite cars. It’s not particularly fast, it has skinny tyres, numb steering and a modest range by today’s standards.
Yet four years on, I still think it’s one of the bravest cars BMW has ever built.
It wasn’t designed to be another hatchback with a battery. It was a clean-sheet rethink of what a city car could be. Carbon fibre, aluminium, a completely different approach to packaging, and a driving experience that rewards smoothness rather than aggression.
It has flaws, plenty of them, but it’s one of those rare cars with genuine character. The sort of car that makes you smile every time you walk up to it.
